Roulette is one of the casino games where players get to choose between a wide range of bets. Some are riskier than others, but generally, the types of bets in the game can be divided into two major categories – inside and outside bets. Inside bets are placed in the centre of the table’s layout on individual numbers or on specific combinations of numbers. Inside bets involve a higher risk for players as one’s chances of winning with such wagers are smaller. However, it is well worth it since inside bets have larger payouts when compared to outside bets.
Roulette players have a variety of betting options. Placing inside bets is either selecting the exact number of the pocket the ball will land in, or a small range of pockets based on their proximity on the layout.
- How Bets Work in Roulette. Divide the bets into two groups: Inside bets; Outside bets; Inside bets are based on individual numbers or small groups of numbers. When you see players betting on the lines, corners, and individual numbers on the table they are making inside bets. Outside bets are based on pre-selected groups of numbers on the wheel.
- As you probably know already, there are two major categories of bets in roulette. Inside bets are made either on individual numbers or on groups of neighbouring numbers on the layout. Making such bets involves a higher degree of risk. Because of this, less experienced players are generally recommended to make outside bets as the chances of.
The Straight Up Bet
Straight Up bets are placed on an individual number on the table layout. Players get to choose any number they like from 1 to 36 but inside bets can also be placed on the zero (or the double-zero in American roulette).
When players want to make a Straight Up bet, they are expected to place their chips in the middle of the number box for their chosen number. The chips are not supposed to touch the outlines of the number box. Provided that there are several players who wish to place a bet on the same number, their chips are stacked in a pile, so that they can be placed in the centre of the box. Players can place as many Straight Up bets as they wish.
Winning Straight Up bets have a payout of 35 to 1. For example, if a player wagers £1 on number 9 and wins, they will collect a total of £36 – their original wager plus net profit of £35. Please note the true odds of winning with a Straight Up bet are 37 to 1.
The Split Bet
The Split is a combination bet which covers two adjacent numbers on the layout. With Split bets, players are expected to place their chips on the line between the two adjacent numbers they have chosen. Remember, the two numbers you want to cover are adjacent on the table layout but they are not located next to one another on the wheel. Winning Split bets pay out 17 to 1.

The Street Bet
The Street bet is also referred to as a Row bet because it covers three consecutive numbers on any given row on the layout – 13, 14 and 15, for instance. Players are expected to place their chips on the line located to the right of the three numbers they want to cover with their Street bet. In other words, the chips should be placed on the line next to the first number on the row. In this case, this would be number 13. Street bets have a payout of 11 to 1.
The Square or Corner Bet
The Square or Corner is yet another combination bet which covers a cluster of four numbers on the table layout. To place one such bet, the player is required to put a chip or a stack of chips in the very centre of the cluster, where the vertical and horizontal lines of the four numbers intersect. Keep in mind the chip or stack of chips should touch the corners of all four numbers. Winning Square bets pay out 8 to 1.
Aside from Corner or Square bet, this wager type is also known as a four-number wager.
The Six Line or Quint Bet
As the name itself suggests, Six Line bets, also known as Quint bets, cover six consecutive numbers on the table layout. This, however, does not mean the numbers are located next to one another on the wheel. The Six Line bet is often referred to as Double Street because the players get to wager on two consecutive rows. For example, a Six Line bet will cover numbers 25, 26 and 27 on one row and numbers 28, 29 and 30 on the row below. To place this type of inside bet, players need to put their chips to the right, on the line between the rows of numbers they want to cover. A winning Six Line bet has a payout of 5 to 1.
The Five Number Bet
The Five Number bet, also known as a Sucker or Basket bet, can be placed only in a game of American roulette where there are single-zero and double-zero pockets. As the name itself suggests, players can cover five consecutive numbers with a single chip, namely 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. The chips for this bet are placed on the line between the zeros and the first row of numbers. Should the ball land on one of these five numbers, the player will be paid out at the rate of 6 to 1.
This type of bet should not be confused with the Four Number bet – a wager which can be placed only on a French roulette table where the La Partage rule applies. The Four Number bet is also placed on 0, 1, 2, and 3 only, but its odds are better.
Five Number bets are considered the worst type of wager to make on a roulette table, so players are recommended to steer clear of them. In American roulette, the house edge is 5.26% on all inside and outside bets, the Five Number bet being the only exception – it gives the house a whooping advantage of 7.9%.
Snake Bet
The Snake bet is the last one from the inside bets roulette lovers can go for. The payouts winning Snake bets reward are identical with the ones that are given for winning Dozen bets, more specifically, 2:1. Interestingly enough, this bet type was named after the zigzagging pattern that is formed once all the 12 numbers it covers are linked. The numbers Snake bets cover include 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. What roulette fans should remember is that opting for this bet type may not always be possible. Yet, in the event that Snake bets are accepted, however, the chips for them should be moved to the lower corner of the box that corresponds to 34.
Depending on the casino gambling enthusiasts are playing at, they might see that a snake is featured on the betting layout, and its body moves precisely around the above-mentioned numbers.

Useful Articles
The game of roulette offers players a large selection of bets they can make in any round of play. The bets are divided into two main categories; ‘inside bets’ and ‘outside bets’. Players are allowed to mix different types of bets during each round of play.
This article will explore all issues relating to inside bets. Let us just come out and say that overall inside bets are not favorable to the player and it is usually recommended to stay away from them and focus on outside bets.
That said we do understand that for some types of roulette players inside bets are ideal. These players seek the excitement that high risks and high rewards have to offer, and are completely aware of the risks they are taking with their hard-earned cash.
What are Inside Bets?
Roulette inside bets offer very high payouts but have a low probability of being successful. In other words; the odds of making a winning inside bet are low so the casino needs to entice players with big payouts.
Inside bets are made on a single number or a combination of up to 6 adjacent numbers and each type of inside bet has its own odds and payout offered.
Types of Inside Bets
European roulette has five types of inside bets. American roulette offers these five types and one additional inside bet that is exclusive to American roulette.
Straight Up Bet
Called “En plein” in French, this is a bet on a single number and it needs to be made by placing your chips on the roulette table layout in the middle of the area box for the number you wish to bet on. You are allowed to make more than one ‘straight up’ bet.
The Odds of winning a ‘straight up’ bet when playing European roulette are 37-to-1 and in American roulette they are 38-to-1. Both types of roulette offer a payout of 35-to-1 for a winning ‘straight up’ bet. Therefore if you have to make a ‘straight up’ bet do so when playing European roulette as you have a bigger chance of succeeding than American roulette for the same type of payout.
Split Bet
Called “Cheval” in French, this is a bet made on two adjoining numbers that are connected to one another either vertically or horizontally. It offers a payout of 17-to-1.
Street Bet
Called “Transversale” in French, this is a bet made on three numbers that are located on the same horizontal line on the roulette table layout. It offers a payout of 11-to-1.
Corner Bet
Called “Carre” in French, this is a bet made on a corner that is the meeting point of four different numbers. The bet is made by placing chips on the middle point of four numbers on the roulette table layout. It offers a payout of 8-to-1.
Double Street Bet
Called “Sixainne” in French, this is a bet made on two adjoining streets (horizontal line of three numbers). It offers a payout of 5-to-1.
Top Line Bet
Sometimes referred to as ‘five line’ bet, this is a bet that is available only on American roulette. The bet is made on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 by placing your chips on the corner of 0 and 1 or the corner of 00 and 3. It offers a payout of 6-to-1.
The Benefits of Inside Bets
Best Roulette Bet
One of the best feelings in the world is the feeling of winning a ‘straight up’ bet when playing roulette. The low chances of making a successful ‘straight up’ bet and the big payout of 35-to-1 offered for a successful ‘straight up’ bet make the experience an exhilarating one.
![Inside Inside](https://bfgblog-a.akamaihd.net/uploads/2013/11/16-4-Corner-Bet.png)
This is especially true when making a ‘straight up’ bet on a special date, like your birthday or anniversary, or on your “lucky number”.
The Pitfalls of Inside Bets
Focusing on inside bets when playing roulette is a sure way of getting rid of your bankroll very quickly. If you must make inside bets, try to combine them with outside bets in order to increase your chances of winning some bets that will pay for all your losing inside bets.
